Zverev is tough when evaluating duel with João Fonseca

Despite the victory, Alexander Zverev did not welcome the duel with João Fonseca. The two faced each other this Friday (10), in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, and the German won by 2 sets to 1 (7/5, 6/7 and 6/3).

“About the high level, I’m not sure. I don’t think it was a great match, to be honest, for both of us,” said the tennis player, in an interview with ESPN after the match.

Despite the harshness of the words, Zverev understands that it is natural that the level will not be as high in the first tournament of the clay season.

“This is the first week on clay for all of us. It won’t be easy, it won’t be the most beautiful tennis. I won. I’m in the semi-finals. I’m super happy with that”, he highlighted.

“I think the best set of tennis was the third for me. That shows evolution. That’s the most important thing this week. Showing evolution,” he added.

Next challenge

In the semi-final, Zverev will face the winner of the clash between , who are currently facing each other. The German pointed out where he needs to improve to win a place in the final.

“Show a slightly more aggressive game. Because I’m failing a little more on clay than I was on hard court”, he concluded.

João Fonseca

The tournament in Monaco is the first of the clay season in Europe. After this competition, João Fonseca will move on to Roland Garros.
