Government must intervene more firmly in Petrobras, says deputy

The federal deputy (PP-RJ) criticized the natural gas pricing policy in Brazil this Friday (April 10, 2026), during an event that brings together leaders from the energy sector in Rio de Janeiro, and defended a firmer intervention by the federal government in Petrobras to reduce costs in the sector.

According to him, there is room for price reduction, especially with regard to logistics, without compromising the company’s operations. “When you want, you go; when you want, you do […] That there be an intervention so that the price of natural gas in Brazil has a discount on this extraordinary cost that has already been amortized, which Petrobras can absorb”he stated.

Despite being the majority shareholder of Petrobras, the government does not directly interfere in the company’s operations as it is a mixed company that follows specific governance and market rules.

Lopes’ speech takes place in a context of pressure on natural gas prices in the country and debates about the commercialization model and price formation, including contracts in the market.

On Thursday (April 9), the Federal Police carried out the task of inspecting distributors and resellers of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), known as cooking gas. The action was carried out with the National Consumer Secretariat and the ANP (National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels).

The topic gained strength after changes in Petrobras’ management and the company’s pricing policy.
