Three people died in an accident at a leather and fur processing factory in the German town of Runkel. local authorities announced on Thursday. Approximately 150 rescuers were deployed at the site. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

Two other people suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospitalthe Ministry of the Interior of the federal state of Hesse said. Their condition is critical, the spokesperson of the local rescue service told DPA. The victims were found in a waste tank, the spokesman said, adding that it was still unclear which chemicals in the tank caused the death.

Currently, however according to the ministry, carbon dioxide (CO₂) poisoning is not excluded. Since various chemicals are used at the facility, rescuers who come into direct contact with the victims undergo decontamination and are examined by a doctor as a precaution. According to rescue services, the incident does not pose any danger to the public.
