The Vice President of the United States, JD Vancesaid that the Iranian negotiators refused to accept the terms proposed by the US for an agreement.
“We’re already at it. 21 hours ago and we have had several substantial discussions with the Iranians. That’s the good news,” Vance said in a press conference in Islamabadin Pakistan.
According to him, the Americans were “quite flexible” in the proposal.
“The president told us, ‘You need to come here in good faith and do everything you can to reach an agreement.’ We did that and, unfortunately, we were unable to move forward,” said the vice president.
Vance suggested that the main point of contention was Iran’s refusal to abandon the nuclear program.
“We leave here with a very simple proposal, an agreement that is our final and best offer... we will see if the Iranians will accept it,” he said.
The vice president now returns to the United States.
Iran’s capabilities
Former State Department Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller said the Iranians “they have more tricks up their sleeves than the Americans”.
“They are clearly in no rush to make concessions,” Miller told CNN, suggesting that Iran appeared to be operating at a slower pace than the US.
“It appears they still possess highly enriched uranium. They have demonstrated that they have weaponized geography and control and now administer the Strait of Hormuz. The regime has survived.”
Miller said he believes Iran would rather risk a new wave of military strikes from the US and Israel than emerge from the talks empty-handed.
