The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes came out this Sunday, 12th, in defense of the appointment of the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, for a seat on the Court. In a publication made on the social network
“In recent days, sectors of the press have launched empty and hasty criticisms of the name chosen by the President of the Republic for the vacancy open in the STF. These are shallow readings that ignore the qualified curriculum of the current Attorney General of the Union, marked by vast experience in public administration and solid academic training. Throughout his career in public service, Jorge Messias held highly responsible roles, always standing out for his technical performance, respect for the separation of Powers and his conciliatory profile. At the head of the AGU, he played an important role in defense of national sovereignty, in confronting the tariffs imposed on Brazilian products. His actions before the Supreme Court were also fundamental in holding big techs accountable for criminal publications on social media”, wrote Gilmar.
The minister continued: “These credentials show that Jorge Messias is up to the task and has the conditions to exercise the judiciary with balance, responsibility and high institutional sense. The Senate will know how to analyze his multiple attributes.”
As Estadão showed, STF ministers have been campaigning for Jorge Messias’ name with an eye on his future support within the Court itself.
On the one hand, Gilmar Mendes and Cristiano Zanin, who are allies in the Supreme Court and oppose Fachin on issues that the president considers crucial, ask senators for votes in favor of Messias. André Mendonça and Kassio Nunes Marques are running on the other side – who, in turn, support Fachin’s management and the priorities he chose.
