- Washing windows is the key to aesthetics and light, but streaks spoil the effect.
- Traditional methods often fail, leaving unsightly streaks.
- Learn a surprising mountaineer’s trick that guarantees shiny, stain-free windows for longer!
A high-altitude alpinist friend showed me his way of cleaning windows without streaks
. Dirty glass affects the overall aesthetics of the entire room, and in extreme cases limits access to sunlight. Experts suggest that windows should be replaced every few months. Residents of large cities should do it more often, where exhaust fumes, smog and other pollutants accumulate on the windows. It is best to wash windows on a sunny day with temperatures above freezing. Washing windows during frosts may result in micro-damages caused by freezing water.
One of the most common problems are streaks and streaks on the windows. They occur as a result of inappropriate use of cloths and detergents. Stains usually appear due to a dirty cloth or too much window cleaner. The movements of the cloth itself are also important. It is best to wash the windows in circular motions. After wet wiping the windows, wipe them dry with a clean cloth.
You can also use home remedies to reduce the risk of streaks on the windows. On the Internet, spirit vinegar is most often recommended for cleaning windows. Its acidic formula evaporates from windows, leaving the windows clean and streak-free. Just add half a cup of vinegar to slightly warm water and wipe the windows with this mixture.
A high-altitude alpinist friend told me that he uses a different method in his work, one that his grandmother taught him. His secret ingredient for cleaning windows is glycerin. 1 teaspoon of glycerin added to 1 liter of water does nothing. Just wash your windows thoroughly with liquid containing glycerin and the windows will be shiny and streak-free. Glycerin facilitates the evaporation of water, so there are no streaks. Additionally, glycerin creates an invisible coating on the windows that prevents dirt from accumulating. This makes the windows stay clean for a longer time.
How to wash windows?
Before proper washing, remove dust, cobwebs and other dirt from window frames and sills. You can do this using a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a damp cloth. This will help you avoid smearing dirt on the glass. Now it’s time to wash the windows. Dip a soft sponge or microfiber cloth in the prepared solution and thoroughly wash the entire glass surface. Remember not to use too much liquid to avoid excessive dripping. After washing the glass, the most important step is to dry and polish it. The best tool for this is a water squeegee. Start at the top corner of the glass and move the squeegee down in a smooth, even motion, slightly overlapping the previous strip. After each stroke, wipe the rubber edge of the squeegee with a clean cloth. If you don’t have a squeegee, you can use a clean microfiber cloth or even old newspapers – the paper polishes the glass perfectly and does not leave fibers.
