This is one of those brilliant ideas that elicit the famous rhetorical reaction: “Why didn’t I think of that before?” Which increases the genius of whoever thought of it before and, more importantly, who carried out the excerpt: journalist and YouTuber Sérgio Rocha, from the Corrida no Ar channel.
With a little networking and a technology solution, he has just created Brasil Gigante, a kind of Brazilian Marathon Majors with eight marathons here.
The chain, or the “mandala”, includes the autumn mara of São Paulo (from Yescom, contested this Sunday, 12th), the one from Porto Alegre (the traditional one, not the one from New Balance), the one from Floripa (the one from August), Campo Grande, the brand new one from Paraná, in Guaratuba, on the coast, without the seven-ais of the Curitiba climbs. In the Northeast there are three: Salvador, Aracaju and João Pessoa.
The idea is to encourage the marathon runner, this incorrigible fetishist, to travel through Brazil, or at least consider Brazil before thinking about running for the umpteenth time in Chicago, New York, Tokyo or Berlin, to name four of the members of the Abbott Marathon Majors. The curation criterion was the CBAt gold seal, the event’s standard of excellence according to the Brazilian Athletics Confederation, in addition to Rocha’s own gold seal, who knows them all.
His expectation is that, with the union alone, registrations for each event will grow by 20%. There is no marketing study behind the number, but a “good faith estimate”. Florianópolis is already “performing”, with the speed of registrations for the August marathon increasing around four times since the announcement of Brasil Gigante, according to Rocha.
Rocha says he contacted the organizers of the Rio mara, who preferred to maintain their ambitions as a global major – to enter the Abbott circuit, however, the Mara in Rio needs to eat a lot of beans, starting with the elimination of the gold mine, the shortest distance festival of the weekend; and spoke with Paulo Carelli, from SP City, who was about to sign a contract with Nike, a sponsor that normally prefers exclusivity, and refused.
Thus, for five years, the time established in the contract, there are eight, and only eight, even though Rocha can increase this number, since there is no contractual prohibition for this. This is a deference to partners.
Runners who may have previously completed a Brasil Gigante marathon, as long as they were in editions certified with the CBAt gold seal, can use this record for their mandala. The official website is the environment that brings together these records, future and past.
Another non-negotiable point for Rocha is that only marathons be part of his hard-earned alliance. Even though he heard from followers that the 21 km races should be included, he put his foot down, claiming that the number of marathon finishers is much smaller.
For the SheetRocha told the genesis of the thing. At the end of last year, a naming rights holder for a race asked him what his “dream” was.
The dream was the future Brasil Gigante and, having heard promises of money pouring in that would never arrive in the end, Rocha soon began making contacts with partners and organizers.
The following sentence would be spoken if spoken by one of Paulo Vieira’s best-selling coaches, but, ultimately, never doubt the power of keywords in self-help manuals.
