Carlos Viana signals that he will vote against Messias’ nomination to the STF

O senator Carlos Viana (PSD-MG) signaled that he will vote against the nomination of Jorge Messias to the STF (Supreme Federal Court). This Monday, the parliamentarian republished on social media a post by the São Paulo state deputy Bruno Zambelli (PL) on the topic. When contacted, Viana’s advisor confirmed to CNN Brasil that he will vote against the nomination.

Viana was president of the CPMI (Mixed Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) created in Congress to investigate fraud at the INSS (National Social Security Institute). In the collegiate, he defended the summoning of the Union’s attorney general to provide clarifications.

“In matters involving the public interest, the truth always finds its way and Parliament exists to allow it to appear,” he said at the time.

With the nomination to the Supreme Court formally sent to the Senate at the beginning of April, Messias will try to obtain support from senators until April 29th – the date indicated by rapporteur Weverton Rocha (PDT-MA) for the hearing at the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission).

After the rite in the commission, the nomination will be submitted to the plenary. To obtain a place in the Supreme Court, the AGU minister will need the approval of at least 41 of the 81 senators. The vote is secret.

Resistance

Senator Carlos Viana is also a member of the evangelical bench in the Senate. In December last year, after Jorge Messias met with the group, he stated that

Jorge Messias’ evangelical profile should not be decisive in convincing members of the religious bench in the Senate, in the midst of his efforts to occupy the vacancy on the Court. According to evangelical senators heard by the CNN Brazilthis fact, both in the convincing process and at the time of the hearing at the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission).

One of the factors that contributes to this occurs due to a resolution by the CFM (Federal Council of Medicine) on the performance of the fetal asystole procedure.

According to the opinion, the standard compromises the performance of the procedure in pregnancies over 22 weeks, even in cases authorized by legislation.

In evangelical doctrine, abortion under any circumstances is considered a serious sin and a violation of the principle of the sanctity of life. Messias publicly considers himself a “root evangelical”, linked to the “conservative left” and attending the Christian Baptist Church of Brasília.
