Motta: Chamber can discuss ‘blouse tax’, but needs to know fiscal impact

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), stated this Friday, the 17th, that the House is willing to re-discuss with the government of the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the “blouse tax”, as the taxation of imports below US$50 through digital retailers became known. According to him, however, it is necessary to hear a justification for the initiative because of a possible fiscal impact.

“It is important to hear the government’s justification, as this measure would also have a fiscal impact on public accounts, as there is an increase in revenue with this taxation, to know if this year’s Budget supports a possible repeal of these taxes. I am completely willing to talk. The Chamber is always very friendly about reducing taxes”, declared Motta in an interview with Globonews this Friday morning.

Motta said that he would meet today with the Minister of Institutional Relations, José Guimarães, and that, if a project on the topic is sent, he should take the matter to party leaders in the Chamber. The meeting between the two took place at the Chamber’s official residence. “We have to discuss what the model would be. We will always try to listen to everyone in these decisions, listen to the productive sector, listen to consumer representatives in Brazilian society and listen, of course, to party leaders to be able to see the possibility of moving forward or not in repealing these taxes”, he said.

PEC versus PL do 6X1

Motta reaffirmed that he intends to vote on the end of the 6X1 journey through a Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that is already being processed in the House, and not through the Bill sent by the government. “It is the government’s prerogative to forward a bill urgently, which we respect, but the government also understands and respects that the President of the Chamber is the one who says how the matters will be processed in the House over which he presides. This procedure has already been defined by me, which will be through a proposed amendment to the Constitution”, he declared.

Veto on dosimetry

Motta also said he hopes that the Chamber will give the necessary votes to overturn Lula’s veto on the dosimetry project, to reduce the sentences of those convicted of the acts of January 8, including former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The Congress session, with deputies and senators, to vote on vetoes is scheduled for April 30.

“I hope that this veto will be overturned so that we can turn this page, this sad chapter in the history of our country”, said Motta, citing the result that approved the project. “The expectation is that this result of the Chamber and the Senate, of the two plenaries, will be repeated in this possible vote.”
