Tsunami alert on the east coast of Japan after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale shook the coast of Japan this Monday, specifically the eastern area, off the prefecture of Honshu, according to data provided by the European Mediterranean Seismological Center. The earthquake had a depth of 13 kilometers, also leaving a warning for a tsunami threat that affects several prefectures located on the east coast of the Japanese archipelago.

Specifically, the earthquake had its epicenter in waters located about 100 kilometers off the coast of Sanriku. Thus, the areas under tsunami risk warning range from Iwate Prefecture, the central part of the Pacific coast of Hokkaido and the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture. Along the same lines, warnings have also been issued for other areas of the Pacific coast of the prefectures of Hokkaido and Aomori, as well as for the prefectures of Miyagi and Fukushima.

The Onagawa nuclear power plant is also being reviewed, in search of possible anomalies and as part of the safety protocol to avoid disasters such as those that occurred in the past with the tsunami that affected the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
