A new leader in Damascus
Under the leadership of the new leader, Ahmad Sharu, Damascus is striving for wider integration into the international community. The current president led an alliance of rebel factions that ousted Assad at the end of 2024 after a 14-year war.
After the fall of Assad, the European Union lifted economic sanctions against Syria last year. DPA reminds that in January, the EC announced plans to support Syria in the amount of approximately 620 million euros in 2026 and 2027.
