Prime Minister Fico complained about the blocked flight to Moscow: Lithuania claims that it did not receive any request from Slovakia

  • The Lithuanian Department of Diplomacy stated that it had not received Slovakia’s request for a flight to Russia.
  • Lithuanian diplomacy called the participation of foreign leaders in Moscow inappropriate.
  • Robert Fico claimed that his flight was blocked by Lithuania and Latvia.

Lithuania did not receive a request from Slovakia to use its airspace for the flight of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) during his trip to Moscow. It announced on Monday the foreign ministry there in response to Fico’s words that Lithuania refused to grant him permission. TASR informs about it according to the report of the public television LRT.

“Lithuania has not received a request from Slovakia or any other country regarding the use of our airspace for a parade flight on May 9 in Moscow,” said Kristina Belikova, spokeswoman for the Lithuanian Department of Diplomacy. According to her, however, the participation of foreign leaders at the event in Moscow would not be appropriate.

Fico reported on Saturday that he will not receive permission to fly to Moscow for the Victory Day celebrations on May 9 from Lithuania and Latvia. “Lithuania and Latvia have already informed us that they will not allow us to fly over their territory on the flight to Moscow. Whatever, European Union member countries will not allow the prime minister of another EU member state to fly over their territory. I will definitely find another route, as I did last year when Estonia torpedoed us,” he declared.
