Of the 16 crew members, 14 were rescued and taken to Spain. Two are missing
A Russian cargo ship, called ‘Ursa Major’, sank in the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Algeria, Reuters reports. According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two crew members are missing.
In a statement, the ministry said that the ship sank after an explosion inside and that 14 of the 16 crew were rescued and taken to Spain. The remaining two are missing.
Video footage released by Russian media shows the ship listing rapidly to starboard, with its bow much lower in the water than normal.
LSEG ship tracking data shows that the ship departed the port of Saint Petersburg on December 11 and the last signal sent was recorded on Monday at 22:00 between Algeria and Spain.
Upon leaving Saint Petersburg, the ship signaled that the next port it would call at was the port of Vladisvostok, in Russia, and not the Syrian port of Tartus, where it had previously called.
