Astrocartography, a branch of astrology that maps your birth chart onto the globe, is becoming an unusual tool for travel planning, especially for those looking for meaning, luck, love or renewal.
Astrocartography is a branch of astrology that maps the position of the planets at the moment of his birth on the globe. Adherents use the resulting cartographic lines to identify cosmos-approved destinies that can bring them love, luck, ambition, or healing.
Developed in the 1970s and long considered niche, this unique mapping system has recently gained space in travel culture. Data from Google Trends shows that interest in astrocartography has increased considerably in the last year; while in 2025, the Royal Caribbean cruise line has hired a professional astrocartographer to help customers choose their itineraries. In January, Lonely Planet released a travel-themed tarot deck aimed at readers seeking more intentional travel.
None of this makes astrocartography a science. But for a growing number of travelers, this is irrelevant.
According to psychotherapist Joanna Williams, the recent interest in astrocartography makes sense in a world that seems increasingly frantic and overwhelmed. “In today’s macro and micro environments, where we see chaos, uncertainty and inconsistency, we can lose hope in a ‘secure order’ or structure around us”, he says. “Therefore, we look for ways to give meaning to the world, to our own life and trajectory.”
She adds that this can be especially seductive when it comes to travel. “People get frustrated with the amount of responsibilities they have. There are so many hotels, destinations, flights. People they get tired of having to decide everythingso they think, ‘I’d like to be told, ‘Don’t worry, here’s something with structure that can help guide me.'”
A map of meaning
At first glance, an astrocartography map looks a little like a spirograph pattern scrawled across a satellite image of Earth. While the theory behind it is complex, its travel appeal is quite simple: fans use these lines to help choose locations that correspond to what you want from a trip.
“I like to describe astrocartography maps as treasure maps of the world,” says astrocartography expert Helena Woods. “When you connect to your lines, when you travel to these places, even coming into contact with people who live in them, is activating a theme, an energy or an event in your life.”
It is believed that some planetary lines better suit certain types of travel than others. Woods notes that Jupiter lines are associated with connection and expansion, making them attractive for family trips or multigenerational vacations. Mars is linked to courage, action and determination, so destinations close to these lines can attract adventure-seeking travelers. Venus, in turn, is associated with pleasure, beauty and femininity, making it a popular choice for romantic getaways and trips between friends. As tentative as the logic may be, for believers it can make astrocartography seem less like abstract symbolism and more like a travel planning tool.
Following the lines
Business coach and shamanic healer Karen Jackson had a moment of revelation when she began studying astrocartography.
“When I was younger, I had just had breast cancer surgery. I had gained weight, had hormone therapy, and my friends and I went to Marbella, which is exactly in my solar line”, she says. “On the way, I felt like hiding, I didn’t want to show my body. But when I got there, wow! I was a real party girl. We went to a beach club and I undressed to get into the pool. That enlightened me. She was full of confidence and a radiance that emanated from me.”
Since delving into the practice, Jackson has actively traveled to harness the energies he associates with specific places.
“I went to Naxos, in Greece, where my line of descent from Jupiter is, which for me represents prosperity and money. It also crosses Neptune, which is mystical, and my business is mystical. These two lines were passing through where I was, and I was simply making money.” I was there on vacation, but I made a post [nas redes sociais] and, literally, sales started pouring in.”
Relocation astrologer Amanda Voss took the idea even further. After discovering astrocartography five years ago, now lives as a nomadwhich gives you the freedom to access the energy of the lines in your astrological chart.
“I live with just two suitcases and I travel all over the west coast of the USA, mainly Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Portland and Seattle”, he says. “I am constantly experiencing new energies in these places. Since last summer, I’ve been spending as much time as possible in the San Francisco Bay Area. My Mercury and Jupiter lines intersect right over the bay, so I have access to three really supportive lines that help my career, support my growth, visibility, abundance and client work.”
A feeling of cosmic support can be part of the attraction. As subconscious patterns expert Paula Fearn puts it: “When people feel insecure, their nervous system looks for something to anchor itself to.” From a behavioral perspective, astrocartography can serve as an anchor – it gives people the feeling that their decision is supported, rather than something they are navigating alone.
