Superior Council of the Public Ministry proposes the abolition of Porto’s domestic violence section

Six years after it was created, the Superior Council of the Public Ministry proposes the extinction of the section specializing in domestic violence in Porto. Inspectors concluded that centralization brought no advantages and made decisions slower.

In each process, there is a victim waiting for protection and a response. To speed up court decisions the specialized section on domestic violence was created of the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DCIAP) of Porto but six years later the balance is negative.

In a report to the five sections of DIAP, cconsulted by Jornal de Notícias, the Superior Council of the Public Ministry argues that centralization did not bring advantages “it did not prove to be beneficial”.

Inspectors also point out flaws in Matosinhos, where they found a certain passivity and lack of control of investigations by magistrates, who have remained in office since the section was created.

The report criticizes a “snail’s pace” of justice with slow investigations, and blocked by irrelevant details which are not even included in the accusations, and which make the process time-consuming

For the Superior Council of the Public Ministry, the specialized section on domestic violence at DIAP in Porto was doomed at birth because of disorganized process entry, and therefore advocates that it be extinguished.
