Paulinho accuses Lula of “revenge” and calls for overturning the veto on the dosimetry PL

Federal deputy Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP) stated, on Thursday (23), that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) veto of the Dosimetry PL was an act of “revenge” and that he will work to overthrow it in Congress.

Lula’s veto of the project that reduces sentences for those convicted of the coup acts of January 8th will be discussed by parliamentarians on the 30th. Paulinho’s expectation is that Congress will reach the necessary votes to reverse the PT member’s decision.

“The session will be remote, therefore, more difficult [de conquistar votos]. We have to work, talk to the leaders so that we can overturn the veto. The tendency is to increase the number of votes. We must pass 300 votes in the Chamber and a little more than 50 in the Senate. People are convinced that it is necessary to get this issue out of the way”, he highlights. “It was President Lula’s revenge, so we need to take it down”, he stated.

The project, which reduces the penalties applied by the Federal Supreme Court to those convicted of the coup acts of January 8th and could, in practice, benefit Jair Bolsonaro (PL), was approved on December 18th, shortly after the former president’s conviction.

If it were enacted, the PL would see Bolsonaro’s sentence reduced to 20 years, reducing the time spent under a closed regime to two years and four months.

The text was, in a symbolic ceremony to condemn the acts carried out on the same date in 2023. In the act, Lula highlighted that “perhaps the most striking proof of the vigor of Brazilian democracy is the trial of the coup plotters by the Federal Supreme Court”.
