After racism in Derby, Corinthians withdraws seat at Neo Química

Corinthians removed, for an indefinite period, a seat from the Neo Química Arena, in the sector where a recent case of racism occurred. The measure is part of a permanent action to combat discrimination within the stadium.

In the chair’s location, the club installed the message: “Racism has no place here. And it never will.” The space also has a QR code that directs fans to guidance on how to identify, record and report episodes of racism.

The initiative foresees the expansion of these information points throughout the arena. The same QR code will be made available in different areas of the stadium and also on the club’s digital platforms, with access to educational content.

In a statement, Corinthians reinforced that the positioning goes beyond specific campaigns. The club states that combating racism requires an active and continuous stance, inside and outside the sporting environment.

According to the club, the objective is to transform the space into a permanent awareness point for fans.

Remember the case

The episode that motivated the measure occurred during a recent classic for the Brazilian Championship. During the São Paulo derby, Carlos Miguel was the target of racist insults in the stands.

In the disciplinary field, the Superior Court of Sports Justice defined the punishment for the case that occurred in the classic against Palmeiras.

Initially, the club had been punished with a fine of R$80,000 and loss of field command. In the second instance, the Plenary removed the loss of command and ordered the closure of the Lower West sector of the arena.

The location corresponds to the area where the fan responsible for the offense against goalkeeper Carlos Miguel was. The fine was maintained, and the sanction will come into effect after the official publication of the decision.

The tendency is for the punishment to be carried out in the classic against São Paulo Futebol Clube, scheduled for May 10, also in the Brazilian Championship.

Duel with Vasco

On the field, the team will play again this Sunday (26th), at 4pm, against Vasco da Gama, at the Neo Química Arena, for the 13th round of the competition.

The match marks coach Fernando Diniz’s reunion with the Rio club. Fired in February, he now faces his former team on the São Paulo side.

Vasco has 16 points and occupies 10th place in the table. The team has 12 points and appears in 17th place, in the relegation zone.
