The Brazilian film “Feito Pipa” was once again awarded in international competitions this Saturday (25), this time at 41st edition of the Guadalajara Festival, in Mexicowhere he left with the awards for Best Film and Best Performance for Teca Pereira and Yuri Gomes.
The jury justified the award with the following statement: “This film shows us magic, innocence and love through its characters. It builds a universal story from a character’s point of view, complemented by production design, acting and cinematography. And, especially, it invites us to work and build in safe spaces for queer identities and the people we love.”
The Brazilian production directed by Allan Deberton from Ceará was highlighted in the Maguey section, which brings together fiction feature films and documentaries that address queer themes related to the LGBTQ+ community.
And the programming doesn’t stop there. This Monday (27), “Feito Pipa” will open the 26th FICPV – Festival Internacional de Cine in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Five awards
The statuettes won by “Feito Pipa” in Mexico add to other awards that the film has already won in the publicity campaign.
In , the production was recognized with the Crystal Bear for Best Film and also with the International Jury Grand Prize in the Generation Kplus category, aimed at works that explore the children’s universe.
Considered one of the most prestigious parallel sections of the festival, Generation highlighted the Brazilian film for the strength of its narrative and sensitivity.
They also praised the cast’s performances, especially Yuri Gomes and Teca Pereira, and highlighted the construction of the main character.
What “Feito Pipa” is about
The film follows Gugu (Yuri Gomes), a boy who dreams of becoming a football player and lives with his grandmother Dilma (Teca Pereira), who raises him freely and affectionately. When the elderly woman’s health weakens, he tries to hide the situation to avoid being separated from her and having to go live with his father, played by Lázaro Ramos.
Shot in Quixadá, in the interior of Ceará, the film builds a sensitive narrative about maturity, belonging and affection.
According to the director, Deberton, choosing the protagonist was the biggest challenge of the project. More than 600 children were tested until newcomer Yuri Gomes.
The script, written by Deberton and André Araújo, was born from personal memories of their childhood in Russas, Ceará. The director revealed that both he and the screenwriter were children who felt “out of place” and that they were raised, for the most part, by their grandmothers.
