() completes this Monday (27) with a milder routine than the one he faced at Papudinha. At his residence in Brasília, the former president has been dividing himself between TV and measured interactions with dogs, under the care of the former first lady (PL), who ended up isolating herself from politics.
Bolsonaro started in November, after being convicted by the (Supreme Federal Court) of attempted coup d’état. In March, the minister authorized house arrest for three months, due to the health of the former president, who was hospitalized at the time with pneumonia caused by hiccups.
Allies say they prefer prison at home, but claim that the conditions determined by Moraes forced Michelle to choose between her husband and political activities.
Just like Papudinha, the former president’s children can visit on Wednesdays and Saturdays for up to two hours. Visits from friends and politicians, previously authorized and scheduled in advance, were prohibited when Bolsonaro returned to his home, in a gated community.
Those who follow the former president say that this last month has been paradoxical, since his care and, consequently, his health have clearly improved, but the lack of other companies has also had a negative effect.
“Care has improved, and that is real and important. But isolation has gotten worse, and that is also real.
[…] It is a limitation that goes beyond what is reasonable and that deeply affects him, as well as the entire family. The feeling of injustice is not rhetoric. This is what we experience in practice, week after week. And this weight, unfortunately, is not being small”, he tells Sheet lawyer João Henrique de Freitas.
Allies interviewed by the report complain that Michelle is in prison as much as Bolsonaro. Due to the domestic burden, the former first lady stepped away from command of PL Mulher and stopped traveling to organize female candidacies in the states. Nor has he dedicated himself to his own pre-candidacy for the Federal District.
Previously influential and present in the party, she has been able to make sporadic and quick visits to the party’s national headquarters, maintaining support via social media.
She is the one who administers the former president’s medications at six different times, with the help of her daughter, Letícia Firmo. To alleviate the burden, the defense asked Moraes if Michelle’s brother, Eduardo Torres, could also visit the house.
At other times, Eduardo Torres participated in Bolsonaro’s care routine, including delivering lunch boxes to Papudinha. The objective was also for Michelle to be able to leave for party activities, but the minister denied the request.
that visits “were restricted for health reasons” to recover from pneumonia. “Difficulties in family routine, although understandable, do not constitute a legal basis for expanding the list of authorized people,” he wrote.
In an interview with the Capital Política podcast, Torres called the decision unfortunate. “I’m not a nurse or caregiver for the elderly, I’m someone from within the house who already had this relationship with doctors and took care of medication. It would be important for Michelle’s absence when she had party agendas,” he said.
PL pre-candidates who previously made a pilgrimage to Papudinha, now claim that Bolsonaro’s spokesperson has been the senator (PL-RJ), who will run for President. The lack of direct dialogue with the main leader of Bolsonarism, however, is seen as an electoral loss.
In addition to not being able to find allies, the former president has also received few visits from his children, who are dedicated to their own campaigns. Flávio has traveled the country and, according to records from the DF Military Police, his visits usually last less than an hour. (PL) has focused on Santa Catarina, where he intends to be elected senator.
The eldest son has more freedom to visit because he is listed as a lawyer — he was with his father eight times until last Wednesday (22). Carlos and Jair Renan, who do not live in Brasília, made two and one visits, respectively.
Until Wednesday, Bolsonaro received 44 visits, 19 from doctors, 11 from his children, 10 from lawyers and 4 from physiotherapists.
A number of politicians, including pre-candidates for the government and the Senate, had already scheduled visits to Papudinha in April, which were cancelled.
The vice-mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Mello Araújo (PL), had already purchased the tickets. He says the ban on visits is an interference in the electoral process.
Mello Araújo’s connection is with Bolsonaro, not with Flávio. With access to the leader barred, he must be passed over in the selection for the Senate —.
“There is no home regime in which people cannot visit. What happened to me must have happened to several people, which is bad for democracy”, he tells Sheet.
At home, Bolsonaro has been watching war films, football matches and sports programs on TV. He cannot access the internet or streaming platforms. Military Police report shows that the former president did not read any day, despite this activity counting towards remission of sentence.
The former president also helps his 15-year-old daughter Laura with school activities and pays attention to the dogs, which has helped to improve her mood.
Despite this, dogs are a cause for concern. There are fears that exposure to unsterilized animals and environments could put you at risk of further infections.
Cleaning the house has taken up a large part of Michelle’s routine, according to people close to her. She has the help of two employees, one for the external area.
There is also a helper who does the shopping. The former first lady has been managing Bolsonaro’s diet, selecting ingredients and cooking the meals, .
Regarding health, doctors say that Bolsonaro has had progressive improvements and has been disciplined with medication and physiotherapy exercises. Common episodes of hiccups became rarer, but complaints about pain in the right shoulder increased.
Last Wednesday, Bolsonaro’s defense asked the STF. There was still no response.
