Dutchman Xavi Simons is out of the World Cup and will also miss Tottenham in the fight against relegation in the English Premier League, due to a knee injury, the player himself announced.
On Saturday, the 23-year-old felt the injury during Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over relegated Wolverhampton.
In a post on social media, Simons announced that his season has come to an end.
“They say life can be cruel and today that’s how it feels,” Simons wrote on Instagram.
“My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. I’m honestly heartbroken. None of this makes sense,” he added.
“All I wanted was to fight for my team and now that possibility has been taken away, along with the World Cup.”
Tottenham confirmed that the player suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will undergo surgery in the coming weeks.
The Netherlands debuts in the World Cup on June 13th against Japan. The two teams are in Group F, alongside Sweden and Tunisia.
