Washington/Brussels – According to insiders, NATO is considering no longer holding its summit meetings annually in the future. This would allow the alliance to avoid a potentially sensitive meeting with US President Donald Trump in his final year in office. Six people familiar with the process told Reuters that some member states were pushing for a longer cycle. According to a diplomat, the meeting planned for 2027 in Albania could take place in the fall. In 2028 – Trump’s last full calendar year in office – the summit could be canceled altogether. A final decision has not yet been made. It must be met by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
