The leader of the opposition in Congress, Izalci Lucas, stated this Monday (27) that the PL bench will vote against the approval of Jorge Messias for the open position on the Federal Supreme Court. (PL-DF). “
The speech was made two days before the hearing of the Union’s attorney general at the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), scheduled for Wednesday (29).
Izalci stated that the PL bench will take a position contrary to the name indicated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and anticipated that Messias’ role in the developments of the acts of January 8th will be one of the main points of questioning.
The senator criticized the classification of the attacks on the headquarters of the Three Powers as an attempted coup, saying it was a political “narrative”.
The opposition’s offensive also includes the resumption of previous episodes in the nominee’s trajectory. Izalci cited the 2016 case, when Messias was mentioned in a dialogue between Dilma Rousseff and Lula about taking office in the Civil House. In the same movement, he defended that the Senate overturn the presidential veto on the project that changes the dosimetry of penalties related to the 8th of January, connecting the debate on the STF to a broader agenda in Congress.
Pressure on the government
Despite the hardening of the opposition discourse, the government arrives at the hearing with support close to what is necessary. Messias has 13 favorable votes declared in the CCJ, one less than the minimum required for approval in the 27-member panel.

The scenario becomes more sensitive in the plenary. Palácio do Planalto estimates it has around 45 votes, just four above the minimum of 41 needed to confirm the nomination. The narrow margin led the government to intensify negotiations in recent days.
The strategy is to reach the vote with a broader cushion, of at least 50 committed senators, reducing the risk of dissent in an environment pressured by the opposition.
