It turns out that gardens and plots are also subject to trends. In Poland, we can observe constant trends that have not changed for years. These include the cultivation of blueberries, a thuja hedge, hydrangeas and rhododendrons as the main flowering shrubs. However, there are trends that come and can really change the architecture of our garden. This is the case with the no-mow trend, which aims to focus on ecology and a more natural space of private land.
What is “no-talk” in the garden and on the plot?
“No-talk” in the garden and on the plot is a trend that is gaining more and more popularity, especially among people who value ecology, biodiversity and saving time. In the simplest terms, “no-mow” means giving up on regular mowing of the lawn or significantly reducing this activity, allowing nature to take control of some or all of the green space.
It all started with No Mow May, literally “”. This is a British social campaign that aims to reduce mowing. By giving up trimming the grass, you support natural pollinators, which have a hard time finding food in spring. Tall grass and flowers allow bees, bumblebees and other pollinators to obtain valuable nectar. When deciding on “no-speak”, it is worth thinking about the annual cycle. , observing what will naturally appear in our garden. In summer, blooming no-mow meadows will attract pollinating insects. In autumn, instead of raking all the leaves, it is worth leaving some of them, creating a shelter for hedgehogs and other small animals, as well as a natural fertilizer for the soil. In winter, dried stems and seeds provide food for birds. Ecological research clearly shows the benefits of limiting lawn mowing. The University of Sussex conducted experiments that showed that areas mowed less frequently (e.g. once a month) had on average 25% more pollinators than those mowed weekly.
“No-mow” was born out of the need for increasing awareness and the need to support ecosystems. Resigning from mowing the garden or plot makes the plants better able to withstand drought, and the water stored in the lawn is used in times of water shortages.
However, it is worth remembering that “no-speak” also has disadvantages. The concept of “no-speak”, although carrying many ecological benefits, unfortunately also comes with some disadvantages, one of the most serious being increased risk. The long grasses, wild flowers and lush vegetation that characterize “no-mow” gardens create an ideal environment for these dangerous arachnids, providing them with a shelter, a place to feed and wait for a host.
To minimize the risk of ticks in your no-mow garden, you should not give up marking out and regularly mowing paths and recreational areas. Creating clear, frequently mowed strips around places where people and pets stay can act as a barrier to ticks.
