Take your husband for a walk and look for it. Superstitions for good luck on May Day
. Many ancient beliefs have survived in the form of games and superstitions. A large part of this type of rituals concerns spring. In the past, spring was the most important time of the year. It meant life after winter and the time of flowering. People’s lives were strongly linked to the calendar and depended on what nature would bring. For this reason, people focused on propitiating spring and asking for the best weather possible.
One of the most famous was home buying. It is a folk custom of decorating houses, fences, gates and even farm buildings with green birch and linden branches. This is supposed to attract prosperity, happiness and vitality to the household. In the past, it was believed that the color green repels diseases and drives away lightning. In this way, they ensured the safety of their belongings. The custom of owning houses is not unique to Poland. Similar traditions, although under different names and with slightly different details, occur in many European cultures. For example, in Germany it is known to build a “Maypole” (Maibaum), and in England “Maypole”. Traditionally, house building takes place before Pentecost, which is a moveable feast that falls 49 days after Easter. In 2026, Pentecost falls on May 24.
Currently, this custom is not assigned to one day. . Take your husband, children or a friend. Go for a walk and look for birch twigs. Bring them home and hang them around the doors and windows. The protective power of nature will drive away evil thoughts and spirits, and also attract prosperity and vital forces. If you decide to own a house, remember a few practical aspects. First of all, choose branches in moderation and with respect for nature, do not destroy young trees or pick protected plants.
Superstitions for prosperity in May
In the past, it was believed that walking barefoot in the morning dew in May brought health and protected against diseases. Collecting herbs in May, especially on Midsummer’s Eve (although it was already June, May was an introduction to this period), was supposed to provide them with special healing power. In turn, May rain was considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity – “May rain is a prophet of harvest.” Some regions avoided planting trees in May, believing that they would not take off or bear fruit well, another example of caution and observation of nature’s cycles.
