“We are not just talking about copyright, we are not just talking about the dissemination of illegal content”, warns the PJ director.

The director of the Judiciary Police (PJ) argued this Tuesday that the piracy of audiovisual content is highly organized crimewhich “fosters money laundering” and goes beyond copyright violations.

“We’re not just talking about copyright, we’re not just talking about the dissemination of illegal content. We’re also talking about something that encourages money laundering and which generates a lot of money“, maintained Carlos Cabreiro, on the sidelines of the IV International Colloquium on Digital Content Piracy, which is taking place today at the PJ headquarters in Lisbon.

The leader specified that, although “in the eyes of citizens” piracy seems “something that is very simple and that only causes individual victims or that affects companies”, at issue are structures that are organized “in order to disseminate the profits that come from criminal activity”.

Carlos Cabreiro, until about a month ago director of the PJ’s National Unit to Combat Cybercrime, also regretted that in Portugal there are “high levels” who resort to piracy to watch content such as series, films or sport, highlighting the importance of prevention campaigns.

Among them, he highlighted the one that was launched about a year ago by PJ in partnership with Sport TV with the motto “It’s not just a game. It’s a crime. Are you a criminal?”, against free broadcast services for football games, paid content.

“Nearly 34% of the young people [em Portugal] they say that consume illegal content and that in itself is worrying”, he stressed.

The conference is co-organized by PJ and FEVIP – Portuguese Association for the Defense of Audiovisual Works.
