Sosthenes justifies himself after hugging Messiah

PL leader said the gesture was “out of politeness”, and has nothing to do with the party’s position on the AGU’s nomination in the STF

The federal deputy and leader of the Liberal Party in the Chamber of Deputies, Sóstenes Cavalcante (RJ), was criticized after hugging, this Wednesday (April 29, 2026), . The gesture took place during the meeting of the Union’s attorney general at the Senate’s CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission).

After the negative repercussion of the gesture among supporters and on social media, the congressman published an article on his Instagram profile justifying the act. According to him, the hug was just out of politeness and has nothing to do with the position of the PL, which will vote against Messias’ confirmation at the (Supreme Federal Court).

The Union’s attorney general was appointed by the president (PT) to cover the minister’s vacancy, which is in October 2025. Messias will undergo a hearing at the CCJ this Wednesday and, subsequently, a vote in the plenary to confirm his name for the position.

“Being polite cannot be confused with political positioning. The PL in the Senate has already closed the issue and all our senators will vote against the nomination of Jorge Messias to the Federal Supreme Court. Today, when I greeted him, it was a principle of education in political coexistence. We know each other and I have been received by the AGU a few times to discuss matters of interest to my State and the PL bench”said Sosthenes.
