Road collapsed. In Oliveira do Hospital we live “from problem to problem”

Bad weather caused the road that connects Chão Sobral to Parente and Tapadas to collapse. Thunderstorms and heavy rain caused earth movements near five homes.

A estrada which connects the village of Chão Sobral to the neighboring places of Parente and Tapadas, in the parish of Aldeia das Dez, in the municipality of Oliveira do Hospitalis cut off from circulation after collapse caused by bad weather.

Several locations stayed isolated. The road gave way following slips of terra caused by intense rain.

The municipality of Oliveira do Hospital, in the district of Coimbra, recorded more than two dozen incidents caused by bad weather between dawn and early afternoon this Wednesday, including landslides, which caused the collapse of the road in Chão Sobral.

It is precisely in Chão Sobral that the situation has become more worrying: Thunderstorm and heavy rain caused earth movements near five homes.

An official source from the municipality confirmed to Lusa that no homeless people were registered.

No victims to date, other landslides have also been reported in the parish of Aldeia das Dez, particularly in the access points between Vale de Maceira and Chão Sobral, and on the road that connects Chão Sobral to Parente”, added the Municipality.

Landslides were also recorded on Municipal Road (EM) 514, “one of the main routes for the circulation of people and goods in the Alva valley”, between Santo António do Alva and the place of Outeiro, in the Union of Parishes of Penalva de Alva and São Sebastião da Feira.

Also on the National Road (EN) 230 – “one of the main connecting roads from the Coimbra region, via the EN17, to Covilhã” – between Ponte das Três Dentros and Alvoco das Várzeas, landslides were recorded towards the center of the road.

The period of greatest thunderstorm intensity was felt in the municipality between 04:00 and 05:00, while the period of greatest rainfall occurred between 05:00 and 07:00, with the southern part of the municipality being the point most affected by precipitation, with emphasis on the parishes of the Alva valley.

“On the ground since early morning, on standby and making efforts to restore normality as quickly as possible, the Municipal Civil Protection Service, the Oliveira do Hospital Volunteer Firefighters and the GNR are operational, supported by a dozen vehicles, and by elements from the parishes of Aldeia das Dez, Penalva de Alva and São Sebastião da Feira and Alvoco das Várzeas”, added the municipality.

According to the mayor of Oliveira do Hospital, José Francisco Rolo, the municipality lives “from problem to problem”.

“We have to be close to the population and restore normal circulation and security and realize that risk management and the protection of people and property are top priorities”, he defended, quoted in the statement.

To achieve this, “more resources and more financial means are needed”.

The municipality of Oliveira do Hospital has been affected by adverse weather conditions since the beginning of the year, namely the Kristin depression and subsequent phenomena.
