Zema defends that children can work in Brazil – 05/02/2026 – Politics

Pre-candidate for president, the former governor of () defended this Friday (1st), the idea that children could work in Brazil.

“The left has created this notion that working harms children. Out there, in the United States, children go out delivering newspapers, they receive I don’t know how many cents for each newspaper delivered in the time they have. Here, prohibited, you are enslaving children. It’s regrettable, but I’m sure we’ll change that,” he said to the Intelligence Ltda podcast.

The statement was given at the end of the program. Zema stated that he has been working since he was 14 years old and said that he accompanied his father all day, counting screws and nuts, and helping him wrap the pieces.

“Unfortunately, in Brazil, this idea has been created that young people cannot work. I know that studying is a priority, but every child can be helping with simple issues, with issues that are within their reach.”

The Federal Government prohibits any work for children under 16 years of age. The only exception is the status of a minor apprentice, aged 14 and over.

The CLT establishes that, despite a conditional authorization, the work of minors cannot be carried out in places that are harmful to their training, physical, psychological, moral and social development and at times and places that do not allow them to attend school.
