Zema defends minimum wage hike and retirement due to inflation

Pre-candidate for the Presidency of Novo wants pension reform that increases contribution time according to life expectancy

The pre-candidate for the Presidency of Novo and former governor of Minas Gerais, said this Sunday (May 3, 2026) that he wants to prevent the adjustment of the minimum wage and pensions above the IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index) rate, which measures inflation.

Currently, the minimum wage for social security benefits is linked to the value of the minimum wage, which is adjusted by up to 2.5% above inflation. Zema argues that the increase should only be granted up to the IPCA variation.

We cannot be giving real gains in any way. Real gains for those who are retired, in my opinion, is something that Brazil does not support, but retirees deserve all the respect”said Zema. He gave an interview to Canal Livre, broadcast this Sunday (May 3, 2026).

The former governor declared that the drop in interest rates caused by his fiscal package, which includes the privatization of state-owned companies, will increase investment in the productive sector and enable a natural increase in wages.

“The minimum wage today, in large cities, in the South and Southeast, is a mere reference. Very few people earn it”he declared. Zema said that the market “define” what will be the real gain.

He stated that he is also in favor of a regional minimum wage because of the differences between the States.

PENSION REFORM

Zema wants to implement a Social Security reform that has an automatic “trigger” to increase the worker’s required contribution time as life expectancy increases.

He stated that the topic was discussed in the Social Security reform in the government (PL), but “unfortunately” was not adopted, according to him.

“Yes, we will need to increase the contribution time. It is fundamental”these.

Zema is Novo’s pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. released on Tuesday (April 28, 2026) showed that the president (PT) draws in the 2nd round scenarios against the senator and PL pre-candidate for President, (PL-RJ), and the former governor of Minas Gerais.
