Horror in the east of Slovakia: Overtaking ended in disaster and the death of the driver

Police in connection with Monday’s accident near Michalovce, in which one person died, a criminal prosecution for the offense of manslaughter was initiated. He will hire an expert from the road transport department for the investigation. TASR was informed about this by Jana Illésová, spokeswoman of the Regional Directorate of the Police Force in Košice.

The accident happened shortly before noon between the villages of Petrovce nad Laborec and Michalovci. The driver of the passenger car went off the road while overtaking, and when returning back, drove into the opposite direction, where he collided head-on with the van. After the impact, the vehicle flipped onto its roof and ended up in a field.

They also sent an air rescue service to the scene. The driver of the car succumbed to his injuries on the spot, the driver of the van was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. His breath test was negative, the deceased driver will be tested for alcohol during the autopsy.

All emergency services responded to the scene, while the road was completely closed for the necessary time while the traffic accident was being documented. “We remind drivers once again that overtaking is one of the riskiest maneuvers on the road. Any misjudgment of the situation can have fatal consequences,” the spokeswoman added.
