The ice has moved, Zelensky announced the restart of relations with Slovakia: another meeting of governments is on the cards

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Monday that Ukraine is resuming dialogue with Slovakia, Georgia and Armenia. He met Prime Ministers Robert Fico, Irakli Kobachidz and Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the European Political Community (EPC) leaders’ summit in Yerevan, Armenia. TASR informs about it according to the Ukrainian agency UNN.

“We are restoring relations with many countries. We met with Fico and agreed that we will prepare a meeting of governments in June, by the end of June at the latest. Diplomats will now decide whether it will be held in Bratislava or Kyiv. It is about specific things, about cooperation. In addition, we spoke with the Georgian Prime Minister for the first time in a long time. I believe that is also right,” said Zelenskyi.

On Monday, Fico also announced a joint meeting of the governments of Ukraine and Slovakia. “It seemed to me that President Zelensky was relatively flexible on this issue, so we will probably try to organize the government in Bratislava, we will see what the reaction will be,” he said.

Zelenskyj also met in Armenia with Georgian Prime Minister Kobachidze. “There are indeed unresolved issues between our states. It is important to have a dialogue at all levels,” said X on the social network. “Ukraine has always respected and continues to respect Georgia, its sovereignty and its people,” emphasized the Ukrainian president.

Relations between Kyiv and Tbilisi have been strained for a long time. It is mainly related to Georgia’s attitude towards the war in Ukraine and the situation of the imprisoned Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, who is also a Ukrainian citizen.. Critics also accuse the ruling Georgian Dream party of being pro-Russian, which it denies.

The Ukrainian head of state visited Armenia for the first time in 24 years. On this occasion, Zelensky met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. He described the meeting as good. “It is important that we resume an active dialogue between our countries,” stated on X. Armenia is officially still an ally of Russia and hosts a Russian base on its territory, but the government in Yerevan has been limiting mutual relations since 2023 and is trying to establish cooperation with the EU.
