Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Kac said in a joint statement that the aim of the attack was to eliminate the commander of the unit responsible for attacks on Israeli communities and soldiers. TV station Kešet 12 reports that in addition to the commander, his deputy and several fighters were also killed.
A Lebanese security source confirmed to AFP on condition of anonymity that the attack hit the apartment where the meeting of the Radwán unit was held.
The attack on the Beirut suburb of Dahija took place around 20:00 local time (19:00 CET). Residents reported loud explosions and DPA eyewitnesses spoke of panic in the streets. The United States was reportedly informed about the attack in advance.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health another 11 people were killed in Wednesday’s Israeli attacks in the south and east of the country. At least 33 people were injured, including six children and four women.
Israeli attacks have killed more than 2,700 people and displaced more than a million people since the start of the latest conflict on March 2 – primarily residents of southern and eastern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, AFP reminds.
