Canary Islands rejects accepting cruise ship with hantavirus outbreak

Information was provided by Fernando Clavijo, leader of the regional government

The regional government of the Canary Islands, in Spain, is opposed to allowing the luxury cruise ship that was affected by an outbreak of the deadly hantavirus to dock in the archipelago, its leader, Fernando Clavijo, said this Wednesday, writes Reuters.

“This decision is not based on any technical criteria, nor is there sufficient information to reassure the public or guarantee their safety,” Clavijo told COPE radio station.

He added that he had requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to discuss the issue. Clavijo belongs to the conservative Popular Party – the main opposition to Sánchez’s socialists.

This Wednesday morning, Spanish state broadcaster TVE reported that the cruise ship was scheduled to dock on the Canary island of Tenerife, citing sources from the country’s Ministry of Health. The ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
