O Palmeiras released an official statement this Thursday (7), accusing Flamengo and Grêmio of lying in a note about the Brazilian Football League (Libra), published by the duo this Wednesday. The São Paulo club gives another version about the sharing of broadcasting rights in the contract signed with Globo for the period from 2026 to 2029.

In the statement, Palmeiras states that “did not sign any document that implies additional revenue for Grêmio“. The São Paulo residents also state that “the recent agreement with Globo determines that the Rio Grande do Sul club itself – as well as the other signatories, pays a fixed annual amount to Flamengo.”

Palmeiras also highlighted that “it did not participate in any agreement concluded by Grêmio and Flamengo outside the institutional scope of Libra”. This Thursday, Flamengo and Grêmio released a statement stating that “they will increase their participation in audience revenue in relation to the previously proposed model, ensuring additional revenue for both clubs”. The agreement, according to the note, it happened with the consensus of all Libra clubs.

On Tuesday (5), Palmeiras announced its departure from Libra hours after the league and Flamengo formalized an agreement with the other members of the bloc on the distribution of revenue.

Palmeiras himself, although upset, signed the term that established that the red-black club will receive an additional R$150 million for four years, in equal installments of R$37.5 million. The president of Alviverde, Leila Pereira, took a stand against the agreement and cited “predatory attitudes” on the part of the rival.

All the clubs in the group lost a little money to make it possible to reach the number desired by the president of Flamengo, Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap. Despite Libra’s departure, Palmeiras does not intend to join Futebol Forte União (FFU) at this time.

Why will Flamengo receive more money?

Unlike the FFU, which fragmented the sale of TV rights, Libra sold its teams’ broadcasting rights to a single broadcaster, Globo, for R$1.17 billion per season.

Flamengo tried to negotiate new rules for the transfer, but was initially rejected by the directors of the other teams affiliated with Libra. On September 25, 2025, the Rio club obtained an injunction in court to suspend Globo’s payment From that moment on, the dispute between directors became public.

The red-black board found a loophole in a section of Libra’s statute. First, the document signed by all clubs had not determined the weight of each platform in the contract with the Rio broadcaster. Second, and most importantly, the Flamengo understood that the budget linked to the hearing had incomplete criteria.

The statute defined that Globo’s money in Series A is divided into:

  • 40% equal for all clubs;
  • 30% according to position in the table;
  • 30% depending on match audiences.

For the 30% audience, the regulations say that the distribution will be “calculated according to the percentage of audience of each Associated Club over the total of Associated Clubs of Series A, by transmission or streaming platform”.

As there was no determination of the weight of each platform neither in the Libra statute nor in the contract with Globo, the Flamengo found the loophole to question it legally the transfer of funds. Negotiations between the directors progressed to arbitration and, seven months later, a solution to the problem has just been reached.
