Lula leaves White House after three-hour meeting with Trump behind closed doors

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) left the White House, the seat of the United States government in Washington, after meeting with American President Donald Trump. The meeting lasted around three hours and took place behind closed doors.

Lula arrived at the White House at 12:20 pm (Brasília time), was received by Trump on the South Lawn and the two proceeded to the Oval Office. There, they spoke accompanied by five other representatives from each side, without the presence of the press.

On the initiative of the Brazilian government, the press was not authorized to attend the meeting, and the initial plan was for the two presidents to only meet with journalists after the conversation had ended. As the meeting continued, however, reporters waiting were informed that there would be no joint press conference.

The longer-than-expected duration was interpreted as a positive sign by teams from both countries, and there is an expectation that some type of agreement will be announced. After leaving the White House, Lula returned to the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, where he was scheduled to give a press conference.

The specific topics discussed have not yet been officially disclosed. In a post on social media, however, Trump stated that trade and tariffs were on the agenda. The composition of the delegations already indicated that economic issues would be the focus of the meeting.
