We were in November 2023. Melissa Barrera I was in the middle of filming ‘Gritos 7’ when criticized on social media the murder of civilians Palestinians for the Israeli government – it was “fresh”.
“Gaza is being treated like a concentration camp” or “Just as not all Palestinians are Hamas, not all Jews are the Israeli government”, while accused the Israeli government of genocide and ethnic cleansing.
The film’s production company, Spyglass Media Group, was not happy. As it has “zero tolerance for anti-Semitism and hate speech”, fired the actress.
Now, in an interview with , Melissa describes herself as “the perfect scapegoat”, noting that there are still many people in the industry who “hold a personal grudge” against you.
“The specifics of my situation were like a perfect storm. I’m a black woman in this industry. I’m on the rise, but I don’t have a big enough name to be untouchable, so they can use me as an example. I’m well-known enough that they can write articles and create all the sensationalist propaganda they need, but I’m also not big enough for people to care, riot, or do anything in the industry for me.”
The Mexican warns that anyone who thinks her publications were anti-Semitic is “simply deceived in relation to the facts.”
And he admits: “When you do something that seems like the right thing to do and then you are punished for it, it really messes with your head.”
The period following this departure from the film was complicated: “It was 10 torturous months of uncertainty, without work, suffering and without even knowing if my team was on my side.”
But, 2 and a half years later, his stance is different: “I have never felt so happy, fulfilled or at peace.”
It’s on Broadway: it’s Rose DeWitt Bukater in “Titanic”, a musical comedy that satirizes the famous film “Titanic”.
“Broadway performers are athletes. It’s no joke. I have the utmost respect for Broadway performers. And look, I love this life. It’s the life I always imagined for myself.”
