Rains in São Paulo exceed the average for the month in 24 hours and leave one dead

Some municipalities in the state of São Paulo registered, in just 24 hours, Rain volumes equivalent to or even higher than expected for the entire month of June. The storms between Tuesday (23) and Wednesday (24) caused landslides, erosion, flooding and left someone dead in the capital of São Paulo.

Data from the CGE (Emergency Management Center) show that the accumulations reached exceptional levels in several cities. The most extreme case was recorded in Cerquilho, in the interior, where it rained 113 millimeters in a single dayor equivalent to 178% of the historical average for June63.5 mm.

In Itupeva, the accumulated amount reached 98 millimeters, exceeding the 90.8 millimeters predicted for the entire month. In Jundiaí, 105 millimeters were recorded, above the monthly average of 99.5 millimeters.

Other cities also registered significant volumes. In Santo André, in ABC Paulista, the Rain accumulated in 24 hours corresponded to 67% of the June average.

In Santos, on the south coast, the index reached 74%, while São Sebastião recorded 60% of the total expected for the month. In the capital of São Paulo, the 94 millimeters recorded represent more than half of the average rainfall forecast for June.

In the east zone of the city of São Paulo, a during the early hours of this Wednesday in the Cangaíba neighborhood. Two people were removed from the rubble by the Fire Department. One of them died at the scenewhile the other suffered minor injuries.

According to Civil Defense, the property was closed and 37 residents began to receive social assistance assistance for placement in temporary shelters.

Also in the capital, in the Cidade Dutra neighborhood, in the south zone, one after rainwater overflowed through a staircase leading to an alley. The partial collapse of one residence and structural risk in three others left approximately 60 people homeless.

In Cajamar, in Greater São Paulo, erosion caused by the rupture of a drainage gallery caused the partial collapse of Rua Padre Luiz Chispim, in the Polvilho neighborhood. A vehicle fell into the crater opened by the force of the water, but no one was injured.

A similar situation was recorded in Ribeirão Pires, where the sinking of the ground opened a crater on Rua João Dicieri, in the Parque Aliança neighborhood. Another vehicle crashed at the scene, also with no casualties.

The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo says it continues to monitor weather conditions and warns of continued unstable weather. The forecast indicates further rain showers throughout this Wednesday, accompanied by gusts of wind and electrical discharges.

The agency warns of the risk of new flooding, flash floods, falling trees and landslides, especially in vulnerable areas. The recommendation is that the population avoid flooded areas, stay away from streams and rivers and follow the alerts issued by official bodies.
