School year shortened by 40 days for the World Cup? The government decided on the proposal

The Mexican government has decided to back down from its intention to shorten the school year for the soccer World Cup, which starts in the country in a month. The proposal met with widespread criticism from parents, think tanks and local authorities. This was reported by the AFP agency on Monday, citing a source from the Mexican government, writes TASR.

  • The Mexican government backed away from a plan to shorten the school year for the championship.
  • The plan to shorten the school year by forty days was announced by Minister Mario Delgado.
  • Two Mexican states rejected shortening the year, parents and experts warned of falling behind.
  • President Claudia Sheinbaum initiated negotiations with the Ministry of Education and other government officials.
  • The FIFA World Cup will begin on June 11 in Mexico, the USA and Canada.

Mexican Education Minister Mario Delgado unexpectedly announced on Friday that the school year will end for the World Championships on June 5 instead of July 15, i.e. 40 days earlier. This plan has already been rejected by two Mexican states. Many parents also expressed their doubts, and the Mexico Evalua think tank warned that students would fall behind in education.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday that officials from the Department of Education and other government officials will meet to hear parents’ opinions and consider possible solutions. “The intention is to keep the length of the holidays at six weeks, as it has been so far, and perhaps some students will start earlier, while others will continue on the current schedule,” she stated.

The FIFA World Cup will begin on June 11. Along with Mexico, the United States and Canada will also be the host countries.
