Microsoft announces layoffs of Linkedin employees; 17.5 thousand could be affected

In a note, the CEO suggested that this could affect divisions such as engineering, product or marketing

LinkedIn’s directiona subsidiary of Microsoft, began informing its employees that it will initiate a restructuring of the company’s personnelwhich will involve the dismissal of employees, in a new wave of cuts in the technology sector.

“The professional social network must offer a greater impact to users and operate more profitably”, states a statement from LinkedIn’s executive director, Daniel Shapero, released to employees and reproduced by the ‘Bloomberg’ agency.

For now, neither the total number of layoffs nor the areas affected were disclosed, although in the CEO’s own note it is suggested that this could affect divisions such as engineering, product or marketing.

LinkedIn has 17,500 employees, as can be seen on its website. The job-focused company was acquired in 2016 by Microsoft and has since operated largely independently.

“As part of our routine business planning, we implement organizational changes to better position ourselves for future success,” said a company spokesperson.

In the month of April, the Microsoft has offered voluntary early retirement plans to about 7% of its employees in the United States, affecting approximately 8,750 employees. Previously, the tech giant had already announced, last year, the dismissal of 15,000 employees.
