The Spanish press was predominantly critical, with a tone of surprise, disapproval and harsh analysis
It is safe to say that Florentino Pérez’s interview was the one that most “exploded” on the networks in recent months in Spanish and European football. The controversy is still going strong and should continue with the elections and Barcelona’s reactions.
The Spanish press was predominantly critical, with a tone of surprise, disapproval and harsh analysis. Florentino attacked the press, denied health rumors, announced early elections without resigning, harshly criticized Barcelona in the Negreira Case and avoided talking much about sporting topics.
The Negreira Case, one of the biggest scandals in modern Spanish football, involves FC Barcelona and alleged payments to influence arbitration.
Critics (the majority in the mainstream press) point to a lack of self-criticism due to the bad season (no titles and defeat in the “Clásico” that gave Barça the League), creation of imaginary enemies, decadence, exhaustion and sexist comments. Barcelona is studying legal action.
Supporters see a president who destroyed the anti-Madrid press, exposed an orchestrated campaign and showed strong leadership, calling elections with confidence.
The controversy remains huge, the size of Real Madrid.
Until next time…
