He Typhoon Mekkhala advances with winds of up to 126 kilometers per hour towards the Japanese prefecture of Okinawawhich will hit between Thursday and Friday before heading to the north of the country, where it could join the tropical storm FigsThe Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) stated this Wednesday.
Mekkhala, this year’s seventh typhoon in Japanese terminology, is currently over the Sea of Filipinas and advances towards the northernmost islands of Okinawa Prefecture with wind gusts of up to 198 km/h. According to the JMA, the storm will hit Tokio during the day on Saturday.
Tropical Storm Higos, known as Typhoon Number 8 in Japan and coming from the Mariana Islandscurrently has sustained winds of up to 72 km/h and will reach the eastern coast of Japan on the morning of that same Saturday, possibly joining Mekkhala.
Given the advance of both storms in unison, the Japanese authorities have warned of the possibility that they could cause adverse weather conditions, such as strong winds y torrential rainswhich could last several days.
Typhoons are recurrent in Japan, as well as in the Philippines, the southeast of China y Taiwan during the summer and autumn seasons, when the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean encourage the formation of cyclones that sometimes cause significant damage and interruptions in transportation and economic activities.
