The US president has revealed details of his negotiations with his Chinese counterpart on the conflict with , confirming that Beijing will not supply weapons to Tehran.

In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Trump claimed that Xi Jinping had pledged that China “is not going to give military equipment” to Iran. The US president noted: “That’s a big statement,” adding that the Chinese leader expressed it “in a very emphatic way.”

Earlier, the White House said in a statement that Trump had a “good meeting” with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing and they emphasized expanding economic cooperation between the two countries and access to the Chinese market for American businesses.

The two leaders agreed that the Straits of Hormuz must remain open to ensure global energy flows. However, Xi has voiced his opposition to the militarization of the critical crossing and expressed interest in buying more US oil. The two sides – according to the White House – also agreed that Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
