Armistice only on paper? Israel again launched attacks in southern Lebanon

On Saturday, the Israeli army again attacked the targets of the Hezbollah militant movement in southern Lebanon. The latest attacks came just a day after the United States announced an extension of the ceasefire between the two countries. TASR informs about it according to the AFP agency.

“The Israeli Armed Forces (IDF) began attacking Hezbollah infrastructure in several areas in southern Lebanon,” the military confirmed. Lebanon’s state news agency NNA reported strikes in at least five villages in the region. Israel issued evacuation orders for nine villages before the strikes.

The attacks, according to Sky News, came just over 12 hours after the US State Department announced extending the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon for another 45 days.

The agreement was preceded by negotiations between representatives of both countries, which, according to Washington, will continue for the foreseeable future and will also extend to security issues. The truce between Israel and Lebanon was announced by US President Donald Trump on April 16 and subsequently extended by three weeks. The ceasefire was originally supposed to end on Sunday.

Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war after Hezbollah began shelling Israel with rockets on March 2 – two days after US-Israeli attacks on Iran – to avenge the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. About 2,900 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since then, Lebanese authorities said on Wednesday. Among them are more than 400 people who have died since the conclusion of the ceasefire.
