Lebanese President Joseph Awn promises to do the impossible to stop the war with Israel and demands the withdrawal of Israeli forces, a cease-fire and more aid.
Lebanese President Joseph Awn said on Monday he would do the “impossible” to stop the war with Israel after a ceasefire and direct talks between the two countries failed to end the fighting. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
- Lebanese President Joseph Awn promised to do the impossible to stop the war.
- The framework for negotiations includes an Israeli withdrawal, a ceasefire and the deployment of the Lebanese army.
- Part of the plan is the return of displaced persons and the provision of economic assistance.
“The framework that Lebanon has set for the negotiations includes the withdrawal of Israel, a ceasefire, the deployment of the army along the border, the return of displaced persons and economic aid,” Awn said in a statement on Monday.
President’s duty
“My duty, arising from my position and responsibility, is to do the impossible and choose the least costly to stop the war against Lebanon and its people,” the Lebanese president added.
Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war, which began with US-Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, after the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah began shelling Israel on March 2 in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The number of victims is growing
Israeli attacks have killed nearly 3,000 people in Lebanon since the start of the conflict, with 400 of them dead after the ceasefire that came into effect on April 17, local authorities said. After a third round of talks between representatives of Tel Aviv and Beirut in Washington last week, the countries agreed to extend the ceasefire by 45 days, but the attacks have continued.
