Already in his victory speech, Péter Magyar promised that his first trip abroad as head of government would be to Poland in order to consolidate the “thousand-year friendship”. Now he keeps his word and visits Warsaw, Gdańsk and Kraków. Only then will Vienna and Brussels follow. But his visit goes far beyond mere symbolism between two countries that have voted out illiberal governments in recent years. Long-term goals are likely to include not only restoring bilateral relations, but also strengthening a common alliance within the EU.
