It is one of the more puzzling features of human evolution: almost 90 percent of all people prefer their right hand, as a meta-analysis found in 2020 – regardless of culture, origin or era. No other primate species has such a pronounced dominance of one side of the body. Great apes and monkeys also show individual preferences when it comes to gripping, using tools or climbing. But there is no such clear pattern as in humans.
