Former councilman Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) reported this Sunday, 17th, that in his last visit to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) under house arrest, his father defined that he will support the names of Alfredo Gaspar (PL) and Arthur Lira (PP) as candidates for the Federal Senate for Alagoas. They will compete for the two open seats for the State in this year’s elections.
“In Alagoas, President Jair Bolsonaro, the entire Bolsonaro family and the entire right-wing and center-right grouping have already defined their names for the Senate: Arthur Lira and Alfredo Gaspar de Mendonça. They are names prepared, experienced and committed to the values we defend for Brazil”, said Carlos Bolsonaro to journalists during the “Acorda Brasil” event in Maceió.
The federal deputy and former president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira, already launched his pre-candidacy for the Federal Senate in March this year, at an event with political leaders in Maceió. There is a movement for him to join Jair Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party (PL), but he is currently defined as a pre-candidate for the Progressives Party (PP).
Federal deputy Alfredo Gaspar launched his pre-candidacy via social media, in April this year, under the acronym Bolsonaro. He joined the PL in March this year, leaving União Brasil. Upon joining the party, he assumed the state presidency of the party, replacing the former mayor of Maceió, JHC.
In Alagoas, two Senate seats will be up for grabs in October. The terms of office of Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB) and Senator Fernando Farias (MDB) end in January 2027.
