How much is the market for every 100 € consumers spending? Surprising value

Mercadona will open its first store in Faro in November, reinforcing its presence in the Algarve as part of its expansion plan in Portugal. The new commercial area will be the chain’s second in the state and there are already vacancies available for those looking for jobs with different working hours.

According to , the future store will have around 1,900 square meters of sales area and will feature several of the brand’s usual sections, including butcher’s, fishmonger’s, delicatessen, bakery, pastry shop and produce.

The space will also have a perfumery, wine cellar, home products, pet items and a “Ready to Eat” area, where customers can buy prepared meals to eat on site or for takeaway.

Open vacancies for supermarket operators

To prepare for the opening of the new unit, Mercadona is recruiting part-time supermarket operators.

There are vacancies for 20-hour work weeks, spread over five days, with fixed shifts. Gross annual remuneration varies between 7,646 and 10,457 euros, to which are added food allowances, Sundays and holidays.

There are also opportunities for 15-hour workweeks on weekends. In this case, gross annual salaries vary between 5,734 and 7,843 euros, also plus the respective additional payments.

There are also maintenance vacancies

In addition to supermarket operators, the company is looking for candidates for the role of maintenance assistant.

This vacancy involves a 40-hour weekly contract and a gross annual salary of between 15,293 and 20,915 euros, depending on salary progression.

According to Mercadona, all contracts are open-ended from the first day, one of the conditions that the chain has highlighted since entering the Portuguese market.

Paid training and expenses paid

The company guarantees paid training for new workers. During this period, food, transport and accommodation expenses are covered by Mercadona.

The network also highlights the existence of salary progression, food vouchers and payment for Sundays and holidays, when applicable.

Another point mentioned by the company is the organization of schedules. Workers know their working hours a month in advance.

Annual bonus and more holidays

Mercadona also grants an annual performance bonus. From the first complete calendar year onwards, this bonus is equivalent to an extra salary.

From four years of service, the bonus can reach two extra salaries.

At the end of last year, the company also announced the allocation of up to 29 days of vacation per year, equivalent to an additional week of vacation.

Second store in the Faro district

The opening in Faro represents another step in the expansion of the Spanish chain in the Algarve. The new unit will be Mercadona’s second store in the district.

The company opened its first store in Portugal in 2019, in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia, and has increased its presence in the country since then.

It currently has 72 stores nationwide and around 7,500 workers, all of whom have had a formal contract since day one, according to the chain.

Mercadona wants to reach 81 stores in Portugal

During 2025, Mercadona invested 140 million euros in Portugal. The company achieved a sales volume of 2,092 million euros, 18% more compared to the previous year, and a net profit of 26 million euros.

By 2026, the chain plans to open 12 new stores and end the year with 81 commercial spaces in Portugal.

With its arrival in Faro, Mercadona reinforces its commitment to the Algarve and creates new job opportunities in one of the region’s main cities.
