In 2023, a complaint was raised in Japan that is now also changing high politics and influencing the economy: the one about “overtourism” and the allegedly constantly inappropriate behavior of European tourists towards the Japanese way of life. A group of influencers who have become known as “Nuissance YouTubers” also contributed to this, and who exploited the non-confrontational Japanese everyday culture by acting in the most outrageous way possible. For example, they rode Shinkansen trains “for free” by locking themselves in toilets or ate without paying at buffets in five-star hotels – all for the attention of clicking YouTube customers.
