Politicians debate medical marijuana at congress in SP – 05/19/2026 – Panel

Politicians who defend the use of medical marijuana participate this Thursday (21) in the opening of the Brazilian Congress, which takes place within the Cannabis Fair, at the Transamérica Expo Center, in São Paulo.

Federal deputy Paulo Teixeira (PT-SP), former minister of Agrarian Development, state deputy Caio França (PSB-SP) and federal deputy João Carlos Bacelar (PV-BA) will be present in a debate.

The event takes place at a time of economic expansion in the sector in Brazil. According to estimates by Kaya Mind, the Brazilian medical cannabis market should reach around R$1 billion in revenue in 2026.

The country has between 870,000 and 900,000 patients undergoing treatment with plant derivatives, in addition to approximately 61,000 doctors who prescribe the substance. Currently, more than 500 companies operate under regulation by the National Health Surveillance Agency () and around 600 products are available on the Brazilian market.

The congress should bring together around 130 speakers and will have debates on the new regulatory framework, expansion of access in pharmacy and clinical research.
